Movement in state cross country polls
The Washington State Cross Country Coaches poll came out this week, and (as one would expect early in the season) there are not too many changes from the preseason poll released two weeks ago.
However, there were some movers among the Mid-Columbia teams.
Kamiakin leapfrogged Seattle Prep into second place in the 3A boys poll, though still behind six-time state champion North Central of Spokane, ranked third nationally in the ESPN/Dyestat preseason poll (Seattle Prep is ranked ninth nationally).
No doubt the move was bolstered by the Braves’ strong showing at the Tracy Walters Invite. North Central’s winning score (80 points) was 47 under Kamiakin’s. However, with the exception NC No. 1 Kai Wilmot (who demolished the Audubon Park course record in 14:44), Kamiakin’s runners were within a few seconds of their Indians counterparts.
The Richland girls made a big move in the 4A poll, going from 10th to sixth on the strength of a second-place showing at the Highlander Invite at Shadle Park, proving that they have the depth to contend not just for a state berth for a trophy as well.
Conversely, the Kamiakin girls dropped from second to fourth after failing to keep pace with the Bombers at the Highlander. Peninsula and Interlake moved up.
The Walla Walla boys (10th) and girls (received votes) remained static in the 4A polls, and likewise for Tri-Cities Prep (boys second, girls fourth) in the 2B/1B poll.
