Americans lose 5-4 in SO with Victoria, fall 5 points off in playoff race
The Tri-City Americans desperately needed two points Friday night, but one is better than none.
Dante Hannoun scored the decisive goal in the shootout to lead the Victoria Royals to a 5-4 victory over the Americans before a crowd of 3,682 at Toyota Center.
The loss ended Tri-City’s five-game win streak on home ice, and its three-game win streak.
With No. 8 Portland beating Seattle and Everett beating Kamloops, the Americans are five points behind the Winterhawks and Blazers in the race for a Western Conference playoff spot.
The Royals (33-15-2-3, 71 points) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period, with two short-handed goals and one on the power play.
Tri-City (23-25-2-1, 49 points) got a short-handed goal from Tyler Sandhu, but that’s all Coleman Vollrath allowed.
The second period was a different game.
The Americans scored three goals in a span of 1:13 as Brendan O’Reilly, Nolan Yaremko and Parker Wotherspoon all scored. Victoria’s Vladimir Bobylev tied the score at 11:05.
After a scoreless third and overtime, the game went to a shootout, where Tyler Soy and Hannoun beat Nick Sanders.
Sandhu was the only Tri-City player get the puck past Griffen Outhouse in the shootout.
