Victoria Royals deal Tri-City Americans 6-2 loss
Tri-City coach Mike Williamson coached his 1,000th Western Hockey League game Wednesday night, but the Americans didn’t give him much to celebrate.
Alex Forsberg scored three goals, and Griffen Outhouse finished with 38 saves as the Victoria Royals topped the Americans 6-2 at Save-on-Foods Memorial Arena.
Tri-City (17-21-2-0, 36 points), now 2-1 on its five-game trip, will play at Kamloops on Friday and at Kelowna on Saturday.
The Royals (24-14-1-3, 52 points) scored twice in the first 11 minutes, 13 seconds of the game, chasing Americans starter Evan Sarthou from the net.
Nick Sanders came on in relief and finished with 24 saves.
Victoria would score twice more to open the second period before the Americans got on the board with a goal by rookie Nolan Yaremko at 7 minutes.
Morgan Geekie would pull Tri-City within 5-2 in the third, but the game was out of hand by then.
Tri-City’s Jordan Topping and Parker Bowles were held off the scoresheet, ending their point streaks at nine games.
In 1,000 games, Williamson is 475-433-38-23 with 31 ties. He is the seventh coach to reach the milestone in the WHL.
WILLIAMS TRADED TO REGINA: The Americans traded overage forward Brian Williams to the Regina Pats on Tuesday, dropping the team down to the league maximum of three 20-year-old players.
The move was necessary after the Americans acquired the rights to Mackenze Stewart on Dec. 26.
Williams, a native of Claremont, Calif., was an eighth-round pick (173rd overall) by the Americans in the 2010 bantam draft. In his fifth season in the WHL, Williams has 88 goals and 89 assists in 290 career WHL games. After 4 1/2 seasons, Williams leaves his mark on the team’s record books. He ranks ninth in games played, tied for 17th in goals, 23rd in points (177) and tied for 28th in assists.
Williams will be sidelined another two weeks or so after taking a puck to the heel before Christmas.
