WHL: Americans edge Spokane in final preseason game

The Tri-City Americans finished their preseason schedule Saturday with a 4-3 victory over the Spokane Chiefs at Spokane Arena.

Parker Bowles scored two third-period goals, including the game winner at 11:05 to lift the Americans to their second consecutive victory over the Chiefs in as many days.

After a scoreless first, Taylor Vickerman opened the scoring at 10:57 of the second on the power play, only to see Dominic Zwerger knot the score 6 minutes later.

Riley Whittingham gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead just 58 seconds into the third period, but it was short-lived as Bowles scored his first of the afternoon for a 2-2 game. Zwerger scored his second at 10:04 for a 3-2 Spokane lead. Jordan Topping scored 35 seconds later for the Americans, and Bowles finished the scoring for the win.

Tri-City, which went 4-2-1-1 in the preseason, got 20 saves from starter Nick Sanders, while Beck Warm stopped 19 off 22 shots. Garret Hughson had 25 saves for the Chiefs, who were 2-5-0-0 in preseason action.
