Failed kick costs Fever in loss to Danger
Extra points proved the difference for the Tri-Cities Fever in Saturday night’s 47-46 IFL road loss to the Nebraska Danger in Grand Island.
The Danger scored a touchdown with 2:26 left in the game and went for two, converting for a 47-40 lead.
The Fever drove right down and scored on Akeem Foster’s 24-yard TD catch from Pat McCain. But Steve Wakefield’s kick for a tying extra point failed.
Down by a point, the Fever (0-2) kicked away with 1:22 on the clock and three timeouts, but they couldn’t get a stop as Nebraska (1-0) continued to exploit a run game that racked up 182 yards. Quarterback Jameel Sewell had 109 of that and four TDs.
Hunter Wanket threw for 200 yards for the Fever, but it was fellow QB McCain who had three of the team’s four passing touchdowns. Foster finished with five catches for 98 yards and two scores. Dejay Lester had six catches for 85 yards.
Wakefield had a terrific night aside from his last kick, converting his other four extra points and also booting field goals of 36 and 23 yards.
