Warner, Huis finish in top 5 at Washington Junior Golf Association State Championship
Therese Warner, who helped the Southridge High School girls win the Class 3A state golf title in May, took second in her flight at the Washington Junior Golf Association State Championship in Bellingham.
In the girls 14-15 flight at Bellingham Golf & Country Club and Sudden Valley Golf Course, Warner shot a three-round total of 18-over-par 236 (81-77-78) to finish 19 strokes behind medalist Brittany Kwon of Bremerton.
Warner’s Southridge teammate, Samantha Hui, took third in the girls 16-17 flight, also at Bellingham G&CC and Sudden Valley GC. She ended at 9-over 227 (76-75-76), seven strokes behind winner Ashley Fitzgibbons of Sammamish and five behind Kenedee Peters of Ephrata.
Jillian Hui of Kennewick was fifth in the girls 8-11 flight at Lake Padden Golf Course and Bellingham G&CC. She finished at 56-over 273 (89-90-94), 36 strokes behind medalist Anna Davis of Chewelah.
Among those who missed the cut were West Richland’s Carl Underwood, and Kennewick’s Bolton Dauenhauer and McGwire Hanson in the boys 16-17 flight.
CFL
Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly (Kamiakin) was named a Canadian Football League player of the month for July.
In five games, Reilly went 147-for-207 passing (71 percent) for 1,926 yards and 11 touchdowns, and had three interceptions. The former Central Washington University standout also totaled 90 yards on 25 carries.
Softball
The USA Explosion-K. Richards team was eliminated from the Girls 16U Class A USA/ASA Fastpitch National Tournament in College Station, Texas.
The Explosion went 0-4 at the tournament, losing their final game 6-3 to Firecrackers GA-McDonald.
Abriel Cuello of Kennewick went 2-for-3 for the Explosion, but Firecrackers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull away.
▪ The USA Explosion are holding tryouts Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High School and Sunday at Connell High.
The Explosion also will hold tryouts Aug. 13 at Columbia Basin College. They’ll be back at Coeur d’Alene High on Aug. 14.
Tryout times at all sites will be 10 a.m.-noon (12U-14U) and 1 p.m.-3 p.m. (16U-18U).

Track and field
Isaiah Perez of Othello finished eighth in the 13-14 boys discus at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships last week in Sacramento.
Competing unattached, Perez threw 149-9 and attained All-America status for placing in the top eight.
