Thursday’s local roundup: Richland’s Carl Underwood helps Washington win Junior America’s Cup
Richland’s Carl Underwood and Team Washington beat San Diego by one stroke, 639-640, on Thursday to win the Junior America’s Cup.
The 44th annual golf event was held July 24-28 at Guadalajara Country Club in Mexico.
Washington’s Ryan Maine, who placed second in the 1A state tournament in May, won medalist honors with an 8-under-par 208, finishing two strokes better than San Diego’s Cameron Sisk (210).
Underwood, who won the 4A state title in May, finished tied for 19th with a 2-over 218.
Also competing for Washington were Sean Kato of Redmond, who was seventh at 3-under 213, and Ian Siebers of Bellevue, who shot a 5-over 221 to finish 36th.
Youth baseball
The Kennewick Outlaws won the American Legion AAA state tournament with a 14-4 victory over Bellingham Post 7 at Parker Field in Yakima
The Outlaws advance to the Northwest Regional Tournament that will be held Aug. 3-7 in Cheyenne, Wyo. They will play Alaska on Aug. 3.
Bellingham took a 1-0 lead after the first, but the Outlaws hung five runs on the board in the second, and four more in the fifth as Dillon Plew hit a two-run double and Andrew Vargas a solo home run.
Kennewick would score five more runs in the seventh to pull away for good.
Trent Sellers earned the win, going seven innings before Fabian Green pitched two shutout innings of relief.
Kennewick beat the Twin City Titans 15-0 on Wednesday to advance to the title game.
The Outlaws scored five runs in the second inning, then piled on six more in the fourth, bolstered by a two-run double by Mason Martin and an RBI double from Josh Kutzke.
Gerald Hein picked up the win for Kennewick, going the distance while scattering five hits and striking out seven.
