Local roundup: McCullough’s Pacific Northwest Am run ends in semis

Richland’s Drew McCullough just missed qualifying for Saturday’s title match at the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship, losing 1 up to Carl Yuan of Lake Mary, Fla., in Friday’s semifinals at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla.

McCullough, who will be a junior at the University of Wyoming, was up two heading into the 14th hole but scored a costly bogey. Yuan parred and then birdied No. 15 to pull even. Two holes later, he pulled ahead with a par, and both golfers parred No. 18.

Earlier Friday, McCullough defeated Conner Barr of Beaverton 5 and 4, running off four consecutive holes — three with birdies — starting at No. 9.

Yuan will face Ephrata golfer Andrew Whalen in the championship.

Rodeo

With only three performances remaining, Dayton’s Shayla Currin sat ninth in the All-Around Cowgirl standings Friday afternoon at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette, Wyo.

Currin’s standings in her individual events (83rd in barrel racing, 85th in pole bending) combined to put her in the top 10 all-around.

Clay Barry (Kennewick) finished third in her Thursday night performance at 17.414 seconds, and she sat 13th in the event standings with a combined 35.057.

Baley Westberg (Kennewick) finished seventh at 8.29 seconds in his steer wrestling performance and was 16th in the event standings (28.61).

Softball

The Washington Angels 18 Gold-Benson team was eliminated from the 18U ASA/USA Softball Gold National Championship in Oklahoma City.

The Angels, who had already lost once in bracket play, were ousted with a 13-0 loss to Colorado Next Level Gold. The Angels beat Orange Crush Gold Harrell 11-3 on Thursday night and Gold Coast Hurricanes 9-1 on Friday.

The Angels went 5-4 in the tournament.

Local businesses step up to back hydros

At least two local businesses will put their names on boats for the Hapo Columbia Cup, sponsoring the crews for the July 29-31 event on the Columbia River.

For the second consecutive year, Griggs Department Store and Ace Hardware will sponsor the Go3 Racing Team hydroplane as the team makes its season debut.

Griggs presents Miss Ace Hardware will be the only piston-powered boat on the Columbia River. Jimmy King returns to pilot the Ed Cooper-owned craft based out of Evansville, Ind.

Darrell Strong of Payne West Insurance also will be back on the boats, sponsoring the Go Fast Turn Left Racing’s U-21, with Brian Perkins at the wheel.

The U-21 and its driver will be on hand for a free pre-race barbecue Wednesday starting at 11 a.m. at Strong’s office at 390 Bradley Blvd. in Richland. The boat will then be displayed at the Columbia Center mall starting at 4 p.m.
