Local roundup: McCullough, Mandell advance in PNW Men’s Amateur
Richland’s Drew McCullough and Kennewick’s Nick Mandell reached the round of 32 at the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla.
McCullough beat Spokane’s Ryan Maine 7 and 6 on Wednesday, while Mandell defeated Stanwood’s Quinton Borseth 3 and 2.
Mandell will tee off against Spokane’s Eric Ansett at 8:42 a.m. Thursday, and McCullough will face Harrison Murphy of McKinney, Texas, at 9:06 a.m.
Richland’s Cole Lorenzo, Kennewick’s Sota Nozaka and Walla Walla’s Tyler Daniels and Chris Smith were eliminated. Lorenzo lost 1 up to Murphy, and Nozaka fell to Blaine’s Ryan Wallen 3 and 2. Edgewood’s Vinnie Murphy defeated Daniels in 19 holes, while Smith lost to Ephrata’s Andrew Whalen 4 and 3.
▪ Kristin Strankman (Richland) shot her second consecutive 8-over-par 80 and tied for 12th in stroke play at the Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur Championship at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum.
Strankman was 10 strokes behind medalist Naomi Ko (Victoria, British Columbia), who beat Jisoo Keel (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Princess Superal (Sun City, Calif.) on the second playoff hole.
Strankman will open match play at 8:57 a.m. Thursday against Emily Campbell of Lewisville, Texas.
Jalayne Martinez (Pasco) shot an 86 but moved on to match play with her two-round total of 26-over 170, which put her in 30th place. She will tee off against Superal at 8:48 a.m. Thursday.
Martinez’s cousin Neydeen tallied a 175 (87-88) to tie for 34th and miss the cut by three strokes.
▪ Chambers Bay, the University Place golf course that hosted the 2015 U.S. Open, will hold next year’s Pacific Coast Amateur Championship. The 51st annual event is scheduled for July 25-29, 2017.
This year’s Pacific Coast Amateur will start Tuesday at the Seattle Golf Club.
Rodeo
Shayla Currin (Dayton) was 31st in the sixth performance of barrel racing, finishing in 27.852 seconds at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette, Wyo.
While Currin is 178th in the current barrel racing standings, she’s 15th in pole bending.
Youth baseball
The Southridge Sr. Bandits defeated Mudville Pinnacle 7-4 in the OSU Mid-Summer Classic in Corvallis, getting two RBIs apiece from Jake Kirchhoff and Ryan Sanders.
Jake Harvey went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI for Southridge, which led 6-0 before Mudville scored all of its runs in the fifth against starter Casey Proctor. But Kirchhoff came on and shut down Mudville the rest of the way, allowing one hit and striking out five in 2 2/3 innings.
Tuesday, the Bandits got two hits from Harvey in a 3-1 loss to Chaffey Baseball.
Kirchhoff drove in Harvey in the fourth for the Bandits’ lone run. Chaffey scored all of its runs in the bottom half of the inning against starter Brad Morgan, who finished with four strikeouts. Ethan Sanders allowed one hit in his two innings of relief.
▪ The Kennewick AAA Outlaws swept the Twin City Titans on Tuesday, winning 5-2 and 10-9 at Roy Johnson Field.
In Game 1, Trent Sellers went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs, and he combined with starter Andrew Townsend and Andrew Vargas to pitch a three-hitter.
The Outlaws scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the nightcap. Kennewick’s Dillon Plew was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, and Josh Kutzke and Mason Martin each drove in three runs.
Mike Jones had four hits on the day for Twin City.
▪ The Hanford AAA Flames split a doubleheader with Yakima Valley on Tuesday, losing 15-4 to the Pepsi Pak in Game 1 before clinching a state berth with their 3-2 win in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Pepsi Pak sealed their win by scoring nine runs in the top of the sixth.
Nate Rossine, who hit a two-run home run in the first game, lifted the Flames in Game 2 with his walk-off RBI single in the 12th. Rossine and Parker Darnell pitched in relief during the nightcap, combining to allow one hit and no runs in the final 6 1/3 innings.
Softball
The Washington Angels 18 Gold-Benson team won its first two games in bracket play at the 18U ASA/USA Softball Gold National Championship in Oklahoma City.
The Angels scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat VA Legacy Elite Gold 2-1, then pushed across a run in the top of the eighth to eke out a 5-4 victory over American Pastime Gold.
Stephanie Merwin had four hits on the day, and Dominique Martinez and Brandi Andrews each pitched a complete game for the Angels. They will face the Illinois Force at 1 p.m. Pacific time Thursday.
