Local roundup: Southridge Bandits, Twin City Titans win in Eugene

The Southridge Bandits won twice at the Papa’s Pizza Tournament Thursday in Eugene.

In their first game, the Bandits scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past Mudville Pinnacle (Seattle) for a 6-5 win. Bryce Grigg went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Southridge.

The Bandits then rolled to a 9-0 victory over Showtime (Battle Ground), as Mathew Oldham, Tyson Daniels and Nick Grade combined on a three-hit shutout. Grigg was 2-for-4, and Jake Harvey, Brian Black and Jashaun Simon each drove in two runs.

Meanwhile, Justin Larsen struck out three and allowed two hits in five innings, and Jason Webb went 3-for-4 with two RBIs as the Twin City Titans beat the Portland Barbers 11-0.

Friday, the Titans will play at 8 a.m. against Mudville Pinnacle and at 1 p.m. against Showtime. The Bandits will face Lewis-Clark at 6 p.m.

▪ The Kennewick Outlaws defeated the Missoula Prospects 12-4 on the opening day of the Outlaw Shootout at Roy Johnson Field.

Austin Bergdahl and AJ Dixon combined to pitch a three-hitter for the Outlaws, while Trent Sellers went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. He also scored a pair of runs.

Also at Roy Johnson, the Walla Walla Bears defeated the Hanford Flames 10-2, N. Lakes Mountaineers beat the Spokane Cannons 8-3 and the Spokane Bandits won 8-3 against BLE Showcase.

At Columbia Basin College, CWBC beat the Spokane Northstars 7-6, the Yakima Beetles routed the Belgrade Bandits 13-2 and Bellingham Post 7 rolled to a 16-7 victory over the Seattle Tides.

Softball

The Tri-Cities will host the National Softball Association Washington Girls Fastpitch State Championships this weekend.

The nine-division tournament starts Friday with 140 teams. According to a Visit Tri-Cities news release, more than 4,500 visitors are expected.

Volleyball

Richland’s Emma Lee is on the Team Yakima 14 Gold squad that will open play Friday at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships in Indianapolis.

The Yakima squad is one of 64 teams playing in the 14 American Division.

The Team Yakima 15 Gold group, which includes Richland’s Hailey Daves, Alaina Lacey and Lindsay Rosenthal, will compete in the 15 National Division starting Saturday.

Preps

Chiawana’s Ford Powers and Connell’s Jade Chamberlin are among eight incoming juniors in the state to be selected for the WIAA’s Leadership through Education Activities and Personal Development Committee.

More than 110 students applied to join the committee, which will meet five times during the school year.
