Richland’s Mason Hilty earns PacWest pitching honor

After an 8-0 homestand, Dixie State’s Mason Hilty (Richland) was named PacWest Pitcher of the Week.

Hilty earned two wins during the homestand to help extend the Storm’s winning streak to 10 games. The junior righthander threw 9 1/3 shutout innings in his two appearances, striking out 11, while allowing just seven hits and two walks.

Hilty currently leads the PacWest in wins (7) and is fourth in strikeouts (49). He is the first pitcher in Dixie State’s NCAA era to win his first seven decisions.

▪ Jarod Gonzales (Kennewick) went 2-for-5 on Sunday to help Gonzaga (16-10, 6-3 WCC) beat Pacific 10-5 and sweep the three-game West Coast Conference series against the Tigers.

▪ Trevor Jones (Hanford) hit a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday as Bellevue University rallied to beat Dakota State 5-1 in the second game of a North Star Athletic Association doubleheader. The Bruins won the first game 7-1 for the sweep.

College softball

Allie Rude (Hermiston) went 1-for-3 and caught all seven innings of the second game Sunday to help Whitworth beat Puget Sound 8-1.

The Pirates (22-9, 14-6 NWC) won the opener of the Northwest Conference doubleheader 2-0.

▪ Emily Benson (Kamiakin) went 3-for-7 with an RBI on the day as Western Washington finished play at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.

The Vikings (21-18) beat Cal State East Bay 5-3 before falling to Cal State Monterey Bay 3-2.

College tennis

Shane Sandlin (Hanford) and Caleb Hughes beat Kevin Ross and Harrison Collins 8-6 at No. 2 doubles Sunday for one of two wins for Whitworth in a 7-2 road loss to Lewis & Clark College in Northwest Conference men’s tennis action.
