Mid-Columbia sports briefs: Bratton wins SEC swim title

Bratton wins SEC swim title in 200 IM

Texas A&M sophomore Lisa Bratton (Richland) won the women’s 200-yard individual medley title at the 2016 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships on Wednesday in Columbia, Mo.

Bratton’s time of 1 minute, 54.97 seconds was an NCAA “A” time, automatically qualifying her for next month’s NCAA Division I Championships in Atlanta. She also broke the Mizzou Aquatic Center record of 1:55.29, set by Texas’ Kathleen Hersey in 2009.

Bratton was third in the 200 backstroke and ninth in the 200 and 400 IM at last year’s SEC championships.

Bratton is scheduled to compete in the 400 IM on Thursday, the 100 back Friday and the 200 back Saturday.

Coleman earns Big Sky award ... again

For the second consecutive week, Eastern Washington University senior Kaytlyn Coleman (Kennewick) was named the Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week.

Coleman, who has won the award three times this season, won the weight throw at the Husky Classic with a throw of 67 feet, 3 1/2 inches. It marked her fifth straight first-place finish in the event.

The mark also is the second best all-time in Big Sky history, and Coleman ranks 16th in the nation. She placed third in the event last season at the Big Sky Championships, which are slated this season for Feb. 25-27 in Bozeman, Mont.

Marcum ties for 14th at invite

Western Washington’s Jeffrey Marcum (Richland) tied for 14th with a 13-over-par 229 at the East/West Bay Area Invite at The Course at Wente Vinyards in Livermore, Calif.

Marcum shot par in the second round but closed with a 7-over 79 on the final day. WWU tied for third in the team race.

McMichael off to hot start at Linfield

Linfield’s Finn McMichael (Hanford) was named Northwest Conference Baseball Position Student-Athlete of the Week.

McMichael, a senior, hit .588 (10-for-17) over four games at the Arizona Desert Classic, with a double, triple and home run. He also scored six runs hitting leadoff for the Wildcats.

After eight games, McMichael leads the NWC with a .533 batting average, is second in on-base percentage (.600) and third in slugging (.867).
