Mid-Columbia sports briefs: Coleman wins again at Husky Classic

Coleman wins again at Husky Classic

Eastern Washington’s Kaytlyn Coleman (Kennewick) won the women’s weight throw for the fifth straight week, improving her school record to 67 feet, 3 1/2 inches at the UW Husky Classic.

Elizabeth Quick (Richland) cleared 14 feet, 3 1/4 inches to place second in the pole vault for the University of Washington.

The mark landed Quick No. 3 all-time indoors in school history and likely opened the door for a berth into the NCAA championships.

Coleman also finished ninth in the shot put (47-8). EWU teammate Katie Mahoney (Richland) posted a 4:51.84 in the mile to qualify for the Big Sky championships.

EWU’s Larry Still (Richland) tied for sixth in the men’s pole vault (16-2).

Aaron Nelson (Walla Walla) finished just a second off his own UW record in the 5,000 meters, placing ninth in 13:48.41.

▪ San Diego State’s Marissa Berry (Southridge) placed eighth in the pole vault at the Don Kirby Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Saturday.

The freshman’s mark of 12 feet, 10 1/4 inches is tied for 10th all-time for indoor at SDSU.

▪ Owen Lanning (Waitsburg) ran on Lewis-Clark State College’s 4x400-meter relay team that placed fourth at the Boise Challenge but set a school indoor record in 3 minutes, 29.02 seconds.

Ex-Liberty Christian football standout on all-academic team

Minnesota-Duluth football player Tyler Morris (Liberty Christian) was named to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Academic Team for the fall season.

Morris, a sophomore, was among 13 UMD football players and 43 athletes from the school to be on the 637-member all-academic team.

To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore on a varsity traveling team and have a cumulative 3.2 grade-point average. They also must have completed one full year at their school.

WSU sets spring football schedule

WSU will hold its pro day March 10 in Pullman.

Bowling notes

Picking up the dreaded 7-10 split is a rough go for the best of bowlers.

Chances of someone packing a 129 average being that precise? Not good.

But Margie Mackebon pulled off just that feat recently, bowling in the Spirit of ’76 league at Go Bowl in Pasco. Mackebon not only picked up the most difficult split, she also scored 61 pins over her average for a 190 game.

Another big gainer was Debra Tebay in the Tuesday Senior Mixers at Go Bowl. Her 216 game was 96 pins over average, and her 484 series was a jump of 124 pins.

Softball

Emily Benson (Kamiakin) was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Western Washington in an 8-3 loss to Hawaii Hilo on Sunday in the final game of the Dixie State Softball Tournament in St. George, Utah.

A day earlier, Benson cracked her fourth home run of the season in a 4-3 loss to Dixie State. She finished with two home runs at the tournament.
