EWU’s Hayley Hodgins is Big Sky hoops player of week

Eastern Washington senior guard Hayley Hodgins received her first Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honor this season and the second of her career.

The former Chiawana High School standout, who has helped lead EWU to its first 7-0 conference start in six years, averaged 28.5 points in last week’s wins over Montana State and Montana. She shot 62.2 percent (23-for-37) from the field and 69.2 percent (9-for-13) from 3-point range.

Thursday against Montana State, Hodgins scored a career-high 34 points and went 6-of-8 from 3-point range.

Sac State’s Brandon earns Big Sky honor

Sacramento State sophomore pole vaulter Danielle Brandon (Kamiakin) was recognized as the Big Sky Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.

Brandon cleared 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches, a personal best, at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday in Boise. The mark ranks third in school history and first in the Big Sky this season by 2 inches.

Brandon finished second at the meet and was the top collegiate finisher.

Last week, former Kennewick High standout Kaytlyn Coleman, a senior thrower at Eastern Washington, was named the conference’s field athlete of the week.

Comrie added to AHL All-Star Classic

Manitoba Moose goaltender Eric Comrie was named to the Toyota AHL All-Star Classic, which takes place Sunday and Monday in Syracuse, NY.

A former Tri-City American, Comrie, 20, has appeared in 28 games for the Moose this season, posting a 2.79 goals against average and a .915 save percentage. The Edmonton, Alberta, native is in his rookie season and leads all AHL goaltenders with 845 saves. He recently recorded his first career shutout on Jan. 13 in a 4-0 win over the Lake Erie Monsters.

Comrie will replace goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who was originally named to the team but is currently playing with the Winnipeg Jets.
