Fishing derby

KING OF THE REACH DERBY

Seventy-six adults and three youth anglers in 26 boats participated in the Third Annual King of the Reach Live Capture Salmon Derby in Richland on Oct. 30-Nov. 1. The derby participants captured over 500 wild salmon to use as broodstock in the Priest Rapids Hatchery, setting a record for the derby.

Jeremy Siefken of Richland was the top captain and was recognized as the “King of the Reach,” earning a prize valued at $1,000. His crew brought in a total of 63 wild salmon during the three-day event to earn the top honors. Thor Ostrom of Pasco, last year’s winner, was barely edged out of the top spot with 62 fish caught — not counting a lively one that jumped out of his transport cooler while unloading on the last day, costing him a shot at a tie.

Randy Jackson of Kennewick took third place with 49 fish, Brock Miller of Richland earned fourth place with 46 salmon, Eric McCrea of Benton City had 35 fish for fifth place, Brent Sharp of Pasco got sixth place for 29 fish, and Tracy Berger of Yakima got 28 salmon for seventh place.
