College update for Oct. 17

Here’s an update on athletes from the Mid-Columbia competing in college:

ALASKA FAIRBANKS: Kensey Mix (Southridge) had eight kills and five blocks, but the volleyball team lost 3-1 to Academy of Art on Sept. 10.

BOISE STATE: Freshman Reece Carman (Walla Walla) had 10 kills as the volleyball team beat North Texas 3-2 on Sept. 11.

CARROLL: Crystal Schmidt (Hermiston) had six kills as the volleyball team swept Concordia of Nebraska on Sept. 12.

CENTRAL WASHINGTON: Stephanie Rexus (Kamiakin) finished seventh overall at the CWU Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 12. She ran the 2.49-mile course in 15 minutes, 47 seconds. ... Jonathan Lafferty (Kamiakin) finished ninth and Kyle Paulson (Kamiakin) 13th at the CWU Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 12. Lafferty covered the 3.73 miles in 20:57, while Paulson ran it in 21:24.

CORBAN: Freshman Lexi McQueary (Kamiakin) scored a goal and had three shots as the women’s soccer team beat Saint Martin’s 3-2 on Aug. 29.

EASTERN OREGON: Quarterback Zach Bartlow (Waitsburg-Prescott) passed for 218 yards and two touchdowns, and he rushed for 81 yards and a pair of scores, but it wasn’t enough as the football team lost 38-35 to Southern Oregon on Sept. 12. Linebacker Kris Welch (River View) had seven tackles. ... Amanda Miller (Kamiakin) had 11 kills, and Sierra Linke (Pasco) added five as the volleyball team swept Evergreen State 3-0 on Sept. 19. ... In a 33-21 football win over Montana Tech on Sept. 19, wide receiver Joshua Richards (Southridge) had four catches for 95 yards and a TD. Welch had nine tackles, while Dalton Morgan (Kiona-Benton) added five tackles. Alonso Mendoza (River View) averaged 56 yards over his six kickoff returns.

EASTERN WASHINGTON: Delaney Romero (Walla Walla CC) came off the bench and scored a goal to help lead the women’s soccer team over Idaho 2-1 on Sept. 7. ... Linebacker Miquiyah Zamora (Chiawana) had seven tackles in the football team’s 38-35 loss to Northern Iowa on Sept. 12. In a 55-50 win over Montana State on Sept. 19, he had 10 tackles and a pass breakup. ... Katie Mahoney (Richland) finished 14th in the women’s cross country race at the Erik Anderson Invitational on Sept. 19 in Spokane. Mahoney covered the 6K in 22:03.67.

EVERGREEN STATE: Jorden Porter (Walla Walla CC) had 11 kills and eight digs in the volleyball team’s 3-1 loss to Oregon Tech on Sept. 12.

GONZAGA: Lauren Joseph (Richland) had 19 assists as the volleyball team swept Southern Utah 3-0 on Sept. 12. ... Maggie Jones (Richland) finished second in the women’s cross country race at the Erik Anderson Invitational on Sept. 19 in Spokane. Jones covered the 6K in 21:25.97.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO: Cross country runner Amy Pfaff (Hanford) finished second overall at the Treasure Valley Chukar Classic on Sept. 12. Pfaff covered the 5K course in 19:45.

IDAHO: Kristin Strankman (Richland) finished tied for ninth at the WSU Cougar Cup women’s golf tournament Sept. 22. Strankman fired rounds of 75-73-72 for a total of 220 at Palouse Ridge.

JUDSON: Grace Smith (Richland) had eight kills and four blocks, but it wasn’t enough as the volleyball team was swept by Georgetown College on Sept. 19.

MINNESOTA DULUTH: Tyler Morris (Liberty Christian) is a redshirt sophomore on the football team. UMD is a nationally ranked Division II team in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Morris is a backup at cornerback for the Bulldogs but is a key player on special teams. He is also a cadet in the school’s Air Force ROTC detachment.

NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: Sophomore Kyle McMurrich (Hanford) is a starting defender for the men’s soccer team. ... Cross country runner Eli Shelby (Richland) placed second in the Northwest Christian Invitational on Sept. 4. Shelby finished in 26:03.4. Teammate Garrett Kraal (Kamiakin) was third at 26:07.9, and Taylor Kraal (Kamiakin) was sixth at 26:19.5. In the women’s race, Michelle Fletcher (Kamiakin) was fourth in 18:34.9. ... In a Cascade Conference preview meet Sept. 18, Garrett Kraal finished fifth overall, while Shelby was sixth. In the same meet on the women’s side, Fletcher finished fifth overall.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE: Michael Mollay (Walla Walla CC) scored a goal in the 53rd minute to help the men’s soccer team beat Concordia of Portland 3-0 on Sept. 19.

PORTLAND: Courtney Cox (Walla Walla) finished 17th in the women’s cross country race at the Erik Anderson Invitational on Sept. 19 in Spokane. Cox covered the 6K in 22:22.53.

REDLANDS: Jalen DeVine (Hanford) led the football team with nine tackles in a 39-35 loss to George Fox on Sept. 12.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN: Tyrell McGee (CBC) caught two passes for 54 yards, and Jordan Upton (CBC) was in on five tackles as the football team beat Montana State Northern 46-0 on Sept. 12. In a 42-36 loss to Carroll on Sept. 19, Upton had 12 tackles.

ROGERS STATE: Paige Pontarolo (Walla Walla) scored off an assist from Lexi Ellingsen (Chiawana), but it wasn’t enough as the women’s soccer team lost 3-2 to East Central in overtime Sept. 13.

SAN DIEGO STATE: Natilee Ruiz (Othello) had the fastest 100-meter backstroke time (1:08.02) among 34 competitors in the San Diego State-San Diego University pentathlon meet Sept. 18.

WARNER PACIFIC: Mario Guizar (Kamiakin, Walla Walla CC) scored a goal to help lead the men’s soccer team over Northwest University 2-0 on Sept. 18.

WASHINGTON: Lindsey Bradley (Richland), running unattached, finished third overall at the UW-Seattle U Open women’s cross country meet Sept. 1. Bradley ran 15:42.38 over 3 miles. Andrew Snyder (Kamiakin), running unattached, finished second in the men’s race, covering the 4.5 miles in 22:11.62. ... At the Sundodger on Sept. 19 in Seattle, Bradley was fifth overall in the women’s invite, going 20:48.05 over the 6,000 kilometers.

WASHINGTON STATE: Michael Williams (Richland) was 11th in the men’s 6K race at the Clash of the Inland Northwest on Sept. 1 in Colfax. Williams clocked in at 18:14.06. He was second overall in the Sundodger 8K Invite on Sept. 19 in Seattle, finishing in 24:08.59.

WESTERN OREGON: Alisha Bettinson (Richland) had 10 kills and seven digs to help lead the volleyball team over Lewis & Clark 3-0 on Sept. 8. In a 3-2 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 12, Bettinson added 17 kills and 20 digs.

WESTERN WASHINGTON: Tracy Melville (Lind-Ritzville/Sprague) finished third overall at the CWU Invitational on Sept. 12. She ran the 2.49-mile course in 15:08.

WHITWORTH: Linebacker Alex Myrick (Royal) had three tackles, one for loss, to help the football team beat La Verne 39-20 on Sept. 19.
