Tri-City Dust Devils

Lauer stops losing skid with 5 shutout innings

Eric Lauer pitched five scoreless innings to pick up his first career win as the Tri-City Dust Devils snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Sunday at Gesa Stadium.

The lefty Lauer (1-0) allowed just two hits and a walk, and only allowed one Volcano runner to get into scoring position.

Fernando Tatis Jr. led off the bottom of the second with a single through the left side for the Dust Devils (9-15, second half) and later scored the first run of the game on a groundball out by Luis Asuncion. The Dust Devils tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth when they led off the inning with four singles and a walk to make it 4-0.

Salem-Keizer (10-14) put together a rally in the eighth, keyed by a Julio Pena leadoff home run. A wild pitch later scored Zack Bowers to get the Volcanoes within two.

The Dust Devils and Volcanoes will play the middle game of their five-game set at 7:15 p.m. Monday.
