Tri-City Dust Devils

Brito, AquaSox blow out Dust Devils for series sweep

Hansel Rodriguez gave up seven runs in just two innings and the Everett AquaSox blew out the Tri-City Dust Devils 8-1 Friday night in Everett.

For the second consecutive day, the Northwest League North division-leading AquaSox (16-6, second half) jumped all over the Dust Devils’ starter, chasing Rodriguez (0-1) before he could record an out in the third inning, and scoring all eight of their runs in their first three at-bats.

Kristian Brito killed the momentum of Tri-City’s two-hit, run scoring top of the first with a two-out, grand slam home run in the bottom of the frame to put the Frogs up 4-1.

Fernando Tatis Jr. went 1-for-3 in his debut with the Dust Devils (8-14), but also committed two errors at shortstop and was thrown out trying to steal second base. Padres first-round pick Hudson Potts went 0-for-3 and had a quiet night at third base.

After getting swept by the AquaSox and losing five out of their last six, the Dust Devils will try to turn things around with a five-game home series against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, beginning at 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

Baker promoted, Hudson and Potts headed to Tri-Cities

After leading the Dust Devils in most offensive categories for the better part of the summer, Chris Baker was promoted to the full-season Class-A Ft. Wayne Tin Caps, the Dust Devils announced Friday.

The University of Washington graduate and 17th round pick Baker led the Dust Devils with a .303 batting average and .777 OPS, among qualified batters. He also provided a consistent force at shortstop for Tri-City, posting a .938 fielding percentage through 54 games.

Hudson Potts, the San Diego Padres second pick in the 2016 draft (24th overall), was called up from the Arizona League Padres to replace Baker’s spot, becoming the fourth top-50 draft pick on the Dust Devils’ roster. The 17-year-old Potts has hit .295 with 12 doubles for the AZL Padres through 43 games and has logged innings at second, third and shortstop.

Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., son of former major-leaguer Fernando Tatis, was also called up to Tri-City from the Padres’ rookie league squad.
