Baker’s 4 hits not enough as Tri-City Dust Devils lose 6-5 to Spokane Indians
Chris Baker pounded out four hits and knocked in three runs Tuesday night, but other highlights for the Tri-City Dust Devils were in short supply.
The Spokane Indians scored five runs in the fifth inning and held on to beat the Dust Devils 6-5 in the opener of their three-game Northwest League series at Gesa Stadium.
Tri-City (4-8 second half) opened the scoring in the second when Kyle Overstreet, after twice advancing on wild pitches by Spokane starter Alex Daniele, came home on a groundout by Boomer White.
A two-run double by Baker gave the Dust Devils a 3-0 lead in the third.
The Indians got on the board in the fourth, and Tri-City took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the frame. But in the fifth, it was all Spokane (7-5).
After giving up a walk and a single to start the inning, Tri-City starter Hansel Rodriguez was replaced by Diomar Lopez. Spokane strung together three consecutive singles against Lopez, cutting the Indians’ deficit to 4-3.
Seth Spivey followed with a sacrifice fly, and center fielder Buddy Reed and Lopez (4-1) each committed a throwing error on the play. All three runners scored, putting the Indians up 6-4.
Baker hit a two-out RBI single in the ninth, but G.K. Young struck out against Kaleb Fontenot to end the game.
Fontenot, who struck out five batters in his two innings of work, recorded his third save of the season. Spokane reliever Mark Vasquez (4-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, four-hit ball.
The teams were set to meet again Wednesday night in Pasco and will finish their series at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
