Tri-City drops series finale to Boise Hawks

Defensive miscues and little-to-no offense proved fatal for the Tri-City Dust Devils Monday night as they fell to the Boise Hawks 4-1 at Gesa Stadium in the finale of their five-game series.

Tri-City’s everyday shortstop Chris Baker got the night off, and Jose Savinon had a rough night in his stead.

After booting a ball on what would have been the second out of the game, Savinon misplayed another grounder in the fifth off the bat of Bobby Stahel. After Tri-City starter Will Headean struck out Wesley Jones, which would have been the third out if not for the error, Tyler Orris came in to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at one.

In total, the Dust Devils (4-7) committed four errors on the night.

After Headean allowed just the one unearned over his 5 innings, Dust Devil starting pitchers have now not allowed an earned run in their last 22 combined innings.

Boise (5-6) pushed across the eventual game-winning runs in the sixth on back-to-back two-out singles by Orris and Garrett Hampson.

Taylor Kohlwey got the Dust Devils off to a fast start offensively in the first by pushing a lead-off single through the right side, then stealing second and eventually scoring on a throwing error by pitcher Breiling Eusebio, but the Dust Devil bats went quiet after that.

Tri-City had a chance to climb back into the game in the bottom of the sixth when Kyle Overstreet drew a walk and G.K. Young hit a line drive single with one out, and then a wild pitch put them on second and third. But a Boomer White strikeout and a tapper back to the mound by Luis Asuncion ended the scoring threat.

The Dust Devils would only get one more runner aboard in their last three trips to the plate, running into a buzz saw in the form of Justin Lawerence, who induced a double play and got three strikeouts while facing the Dust Devils’ final four batters of the game.

Tri-City will conclude its post-all-star break home stand with a three-game series against the Spokane Indians beginning at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
