Dust Devils rack up hits, but runs in short supply against Canadians
The Tri-City Dust Devils pounded out 14 hits, but they didn’t generate many runs Friday night in the start of a three-game Northwest League road series against the Vancouver Canadians.
Vancouver’s Cavan Biggio hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning, and the Canadians held on to beat the Dust Devils 4-3 at Nat Bailey Stadium.
The teams were scoreless until the top of the fourth, when Tri-City’s Josh Magee hit an RBI single off Vancouver starter Dalton Rodriguez.
In the bottom half of the inning, Adrian De Horta entered in relief for Dust Devils starter Eric Lauer and set down all three Canadians batters.
Nate Easley hit a two-out RBI triple and came home on an Aldemar Burgos single to give the Dust Devils a 3-0 lead in the fifth. Vancouver got on the board thanks to a fielding error in the bottom of the inning.
Nick Monroe replaced De Horta with one out in the sixth and the Dust Devils clinging to their 3-1 lead. Monroe got Bryan Lizardo to ground into a force out, but Jacob Anderson crossed the plate to give the Canadians another run.
That set the stage for Biggio’s big hit in the seventh. His double was one of seven hits on the night for Vancouver.
Easley and Burgos each went 3-for-4, but the Dust Devils left 10 men on base and went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. It wasn’t much better for the Canadians: They stranded eight runners and were 1-for-9 with RISP.
Monroe (0-1) gave up two hits before Will Stillman took over for the final 1 2/3 innings. Monroe’s ERA rose from 3.00 to 6.75 as he was tagged with his first blown save.
Nick Hartman (1-1) picked up the win for Vancouver, while Griffin Glaude pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.
