Indians power past Dust Devils
A day after losing the first-half division race to the Indians, the Tri-City Dust Devils fell to Spokane 5-4 Tuesday night in the teams’ second-half opener at Spokane’s Avista Stadium.
The Dust Devils (19-20) led by as many as three runs in the early going, but the Indians (20-19) just kept piling runs on Tri-City starter Will Headean (2-3).
Headean made it through six innings, but gave up all five of Spokane’s runs, four of which were earned. The lefty also gave up five hits and a walk but struck out seven.
In a season where the Dust Devils have seen few balls leave the yard, the Indians were swinging for the fences Tuesday and managed to knock three dingers as a result. Stephen Lohr hit a two-out, two run homer in the fourth, Clay Middleton followed up with a lead-off big fly in the fifth and Luis Terrero capped the scoring with another leadoff solo shot in the sixth.
Batting out of the nine-hole, Wilfri De La Cruz went 2-for-4 and picked up both of the Dust Devils’ RBIs and scored a run.
The Dust Devils and Indians will continue their three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Jordan Guerrero (RHP, 3-3, 3.86 ERA) will make the start for the Dust Devils and is expected to face Luke Lanphere (RHP, 2-3, 4.05 ERA).
