Dust Devils shut out, Spokane wins first half title
Josh Anderson had two hits and scored two runs, and the Hillsboro Hops shutout the Tri-City Dust Devils 3-0 Monday at Gesa Stadium to take the five game series and keep the Dust Devils from clinching an early playoff spot.
The Dust Devils (19-19) came into the game needing either a win or a Spokane Indians loss on the final day of the first half of the season to be crowned first half champs, and got neither as the Indians held off the Boise Hawks for a 4-2 victory to cliam the title.
Jefferson Mejia pitched the first 4 2/3 innings of the Hillsboro (19-19) shutout, and got some nearly flawless relief pitching behind him as Jefferson Mejia (3-2), Kevin Ginkel, Jordan Watson and Jake Winston combined to retire the last 10 Dust Devil hitters that come to the plate. Tri-City’s relievers, Adrian De Horta and Will Stillman, didn’t allow a runner to reach base in their 3 1/3 innings.
Luis Veras opened the scoring with a two-out single in the top of the first, which Anderson scored on because of an error by left fielder Taylor Kohlwey. Anderson drove in the Hops’ second run in the third with a ground ball to first baseman G.K. Young that plated Luis Silverio, and scored the final run of the game in the fifth after a throwing error by shortstop Chris Baker.
The Dust Devils will begin the second half of their season with a three-game series at Spokane, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Will Headean (LHP, 2-2, 5.23 ERA) will go for Tri-City and Nick Green (RHP, 2-2, 4.45 ERA) is expected to get the start for Spokane.
