NWL: AquaSox win shootout over Dust Devils
Nick Zammarelli and Kyle Lewis combined to drive in six runs on Monday and the Everett AquaSox beat the Tri-City Dust Devils 9-5 in the opener of a three-game series in Everett.
Back-to-back doubles by Nick Thurman and Lewis paced a three-run bottom of the first that got Everett (16-15) on the board.
Like Tri-City starter Braxton Lorenzini, reliever Dalton Erb (0-1) got off to a slow start as the AquaSox greeted him with three runs — none of which were earned — in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead and put the 6-foot, 8-inch right-hander in line for the loss.
Nick Zammarelli made two errors at third for the AquaSox, but made up for it at the plate, driving in four runs on a double and a solo home run — his third of the season.
Chris Baker tried to help the Dust Devils (15-16) keep pace with a two-out solo shot in the seventh, but the AquaSox put the game away with a three-run bottom of the eighth capped off by another Lewis RBI double.
Boomer White continued to tear the cover off the ball for the Dust Devils, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. On his current four-game hitting streak, White has raised his batting average 74 points up to .256.
Like it has been several times this season for Tri-City, the most significant stat was stranded runners as the Dust Devils left 12 men on base and went just 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position. The AquaSox, meanwhile, left just seven aboard and went 6-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
With exactly one week to go in the first half of the regular season, every game counts for the Dust Devils, especially against the AquaSox, who took the division lead with Monday’s victory. Tri-City fell back into a three-way tie with the Vancouver Canadians and Spokane Indians.
Tri-City and Everett will continue their series at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday. Dust Devils ace Emmanuel Ramirez (RHP, 3-1, 2.48 ERA) will toe the rubber against Danny Garcia (LHP, 1-1, 11.37 ERA).
