NWL: Canadians sprint to early lead, coast to victory
From the first pitch, the Vancouver Canadians had Will Headean’s number Saturday night and used a big early lead to top the Dust Devils 8-3 in Vancouver.
Tri-City’s starter Headean (2-2) lasted just three innings and gave up all eight Vancouver (12-11) runs in that time. He also allowed seven hits, three walks and hit a batter.
Bryan Lizardo got the Canadians sprinting out of the gates with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the first to put Vancouver up 4-0.
Playing in his fifth game for the Dust Devils (13-10), Mason Smith launched a two-run shot to left in the eighth that scored Boomer White and got Tri-City on the board. The Dust Devils tacked on another run in the ninth when Josh Magee dropped a single into center field to score Buddy Reed.
Pitching opposite of Headean, Justin Maese (2-2) was brilliant in his fifth start of the season, going eight innings and allowing just two runs on three hits to pick up the win. He didn’t give up a knock until the fourth inning and then didn’t allow another man on base until the eighth.
Diomar Lopez, Will Stillman and David Bednar combined for five innings of three-hit, shutout relief for the Dust Devils, but the offense could never rebound from the early deficit.
With the loss, the Dust Devils lead the Northwest League North division by just one game with Vancouver and the Everett AquaSox hot on their heels.
Tri-City and Vancouver will continue their three-game series at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. Jordan Guerrero (2-1, 2.16 ERA) is expected to pitch for the Dust Devils.
