Dust Devils lose 7-3 to Hops in NWL baseball
A key error opened the door, and a pair of two-run singles slammed it in the face of the Tri-City Dust Devils in a 7-3 loss to the host Hillsoboro Hops on Monday night in Northwest League Baseball.
Dust Devils starter Will Headean threw away a sacrifice bunt to load the bases in the fourth inning, and Sergio Alcantara and Anfernee Grier followed with run-scoring hits in the decisive inning, which broke open a tie game.
Chris Baker slugged a two-run homer in the first for Tri-City, and Jose Savinon singled in Luis Asuncion in the second to tie the game at 3-all after Hillsoboro jumped on Headen for three runs in the bottom of the first. But the offense dried up for the Dust Devils after that, with the Hops bullpen providing four sharp innings after Hillsboro starter Jeferson Mejia (2-1) wobbled through the first five.
It was the first homer of the season for Baker, but Tri-City scraped together just three more hits the rest of the night.
Headean (2-1) was under fire from the start and lasted just four innings, giving up 10 hits and six earned runs. He did strike out five.
The Dust Devils (11-7) continue their five-game series in Hillsboro (8-10) with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch Tuesday.
