Move over Dust Devils. New logo combines Tri-Cities love of hydroplanes with baseball
The Dust Devils are trying to come from behind this season and hope for a boost from the Tri-Cities other favorite sport — hydro racing.
When the H1 unlimited hydroplanes hit the Columbia River for a practice next week, the High-A baseball team will assume their new identity, the Columbia River Rooster Tails.
The “rooster tail” refers to the large plume of water thrown into the air from the hydroplane’s engine while traveling at speeds of up to 200 mph.
Dust Devil players will don the new special caps and uniforms for seven games this summer, including during spring hydroplane testing June 3-5, on the Columbia Cup race weekend July 29-31 and again on Sept. 9.
The team announced the new temporary logo and name this week.
“We are very excited about the Rooster Tails identity as we celebrate an iconic Tri-Cities event,” Dust Devils VP-General Manager Derrel Ebert said in a statement.
“Thank you to the Water Follies for their support of the Rooster Tails. We can’t wait to see our community embrace the Rooster Tails as we all get excited for the upcoming boat races in July,” he said.
Fans can buy Rooster Tails merch on the Dust Devils’ online store.
This isn’t the first alternate identity unveiled by the Dust Devils.
Last year, Viñeros de Tri-City recognized the hard work of the vintagers, who tend to the yearly grape harvest and contribute to the fine grapes and wines the region is known for.
This season, the Dust Devils are 19-20 so far in the Northwest League. They’re 2-1 in a 6-game series at the Eugene Emeralds.
The Dust Devils’ next home game is Tuesday, May 31, against Hillsboro, Ore.
