Dust Devils top Canadians, head into All-Star break in style
Kelvin Melean hit a three-run double and four relievers combined to pitch four no-hit innings as the Tri-City Dust Devils salvaged a 7-3 win Sunday in the finale of a three-game road series against the Vancouver Canadians to head into the All-Star break on a positive note.
The Northwest League will host the Pioneer League in this year’s All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Hillsboro’s Ron Tonkin Field. Tri-City starting pitchers Emmanuel Ramirez (2-1, 2.48 ERA) and Henry Henry (2-3, 2.41 ERA), relief pitcher Jose Galindo (1-0, 0-00 ERA in 15.1 IP) and outfielder Luis Asuncion (.277 BA with 10 doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs) will play for the NWL team.
The Dust Devils have played six of their seven games in the second half of the season against the first-half NWL North-champion Canadians (3-4 2nd half, 24-21 overall) and are 4-3 thus far (24-21 overall). They continue regular-season play Thursday with a five-game home series against the Boise Hawks.
Tri-City, which recorded 16 hits, pushed a run across in the top of the first with an RBI double by Asuncion, got three more with Melean’s knock in the second, and then took a 5-0 lead after three with a run-scoring, infield single by Chandler Seagle to plate Asuncion.
Starter Nick Margevicius (1-0) gave up three runs to Vancouver in the bottom of the fourth, two on a home run by David Jacob, but the Dust Devils had plenty of fire power to get the San Diego Padres’ seventh-round pick out of Rider University a win in his first career start above the rookie-league level. He lasted five innings and gave up five hits while striking out five and walking none.
