Colt Emerson, Mariners agree to record-setting contract extension

Done deal.

Colt Emerson is still waiting for his call-up moment, but the Seattle Mariners are making sure their top prospect stays for the long haul.

The 20-year-old shortstop signed an eight-year, $95 million contract extension on Tuesday afternoon, a record deal for a player before making their MLB debut.

Emerson is considered a consensus Top 10 prospect in baseball, selected by the Mariners in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2023 MLB Draft. The deal, first reported by FanSided’s Robert Murray, includes a full no-trade clause and could reach $130 million with incentives.

“Colt is a tremendous person and true all-around player who is committed to achieving excellence in everything he does, both on and off the field,” Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said in a team release. “We all look forward to his eventual arrival in Seattle, where he will be a Mariner for many years to come.”

The deal also includes a club option for the 2034 season. Emerson was selected to the 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

It’s a contract that signals Seattle’s confidence in Emerson as a future infield cornerstone. The shortstop skyrocketed through the minor-league ranks in 2025, starting with High-A Everett before promotions to Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma last summer.

Emerson is 5-for-14 (.357) with a home run and two RBI in Triple-A Tacoma’s first three games this spring. The Mariners are expected to promote him to the major leagues in the coming months.

“Honestly, when that (call-up) comes at some point, God willing, I’m going to go out there and be the same baseball player I am today,” Emerson said last week.

The left-handed hitter with power to all fields slashed .285/.383/.458 with 16 home runs and 78 RBI in 130 games across three minor-league levels last season. He’ll join a core of franchise players inked to long-term deals upon his arrival in Seattle, including Julio Rodriguez (signed through 2034), Cal Raleigh (2030) and Josh Naylor (2030).

“Colt’s talent is matched by his work ethic, character, and desire to win,” Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said. “We are thrilled as an organization to reach an agreement on a long-term extension with him.”
