Grandview girls roll to state team title
The Grandview girls won their second consecutive team title Saturday at Mat Classic, rolling up 92 points with just four wrestlers at the Tacoma Dome.
Viannei Perez (41-0) won her second consecutive state title for the Greyhounds, taking the 105-pound class with a 6-0 win over Sunnyside’s Stephanie Blankenship.
Grandview’s Desiree Zavala won her fourth consecutive state title, pinning Ally De La Cruz of Kamiak in 5:01.
Zavala (145) finished her senior season 33-0 with 33 pins. She has signed to wrestle for Southern Oregon University in Ashland.
Zavala and Jordyn Bartelson (120) of Puyallup both became four-time state champions. They join Kiona-Benton’s Sheridan McDonald, who was the state’s first girl to win four state titles (2008-11).
The Greyhounds also got a fourth-place finish from sophomore Maria Reyes (100 pounds, 35-8 record) and a third-place finish from sophomore Jasel Perez (44-4) at 120.
Sunnyside was fifth in the team race with 69 points. Daisy Chavez finished fifth for the Grizzlies at 125, while Aylin Bautista was sixth at 155 and Margarita Torres seventh at 235.
Kiona-Benton’s Elsa Gonzalez took third at 155.
The Othello boys finished fourth in the Class 2A team division with 93 points. Toppenish won the team title with 154 points.
Othello’s Alejandro Cardenas took top honors at 126 pounds in the 2A division with a 3-1 win over Andres Aguilera of Toppenish.
The Huskies got second-place finishes from Reese Jones at 160 and Anthony Ruiz at 195.
Royal’s Kiki Chabolla won the 1A 120-pound title with a 2-1 win over TJ Baun of Colville.
Deer Park won the 1A team title with 156 points. Royal was 11th with 78.
Abraham Medina was third at 126 for the Knights, as was Eduardo Rodriguez at 113.
Connell’s Noel Orozco finished second at 220 pounds.
