Grandview, Sunnyside girls in running for team title
Three-time defending state champion Desiree Zavala is just two wins from becoming just the second girl in Mat Classic history to win four state titles.
The Grandview senior, who is 31-0 with 31 pins, picked up two more Friday during the first day of action at the Tacoma Dome, beating Joella Vi of Kentridge in the first round, and Matlyne Mecham of Shelton in the quarterfinals.
The Greyhounds, who won last year’s state title with three wrestlers, took four this year and are sitting fourth in the team race with 39 points. Federal Way leads with 42.5 points, followed by Sunnyside (42) and Mt. Baker (41).
Joining Zavala in the semis are teammates Viannei Perez (105) and Jasel Perez (120). The Greyhounds also have Maria Reyes (100) still alive in the consolation bracket.
The Grizzlies have Stephanie Blankenship (105) in the semifinals, albeit in the opposite side of the bracket from Viannei Perez, who is after her second consecutive title.
Othello’s Nikki Velazquez (130) reached the semifinals, as did Pasco’s Natalie Hall (145). Hall is in the opposite side of the bracket from Zavala.
The Othello boys are sitting fourth in the Class 2A team standings with 49 points and have four in the semifinals — Alejandro Cardenas (126), Collin Freeman (152), Reese Jones (160) and Anthony Ruiz (195).
Toppenish is running away with the 2A team title with 93 points. Orting is second with 65.5.
The Kiona-Benton boys have two in the 1A semifinals today — Miguel Andrade (106) and Jaron Gunter (113).
Warden has a commanding lead in the 1B/2B tournament with 82 points. Tonasket is second with 58.5.
