Wrestling roundup for Feb. 13: McBride, Buckley win regional titles for Riverhawks

Levi McBride and Bryce Buckley earned individual titles Saturday to help the Chiawana wrestlers finish third in the team standings at the 4A Region 4 Tournament at University High School in Spokane.

The Riverhawks rolled up 129 points and will send seven to Mat Classic next weekend at the Tacoma Dome.

Moses Lake won the team title with 179.5 points, while Central Valley (133) was second, Sunnyside (117) fourth, Pasco (71) seventh, Richland (62) ninth and Walla Walla (14) 14th.

McBride won his second regional title with a 5-0 decision over Payton Castro of Moses Lake at 220 pounds.

Buckley, who was fourth last year at 145, won the 152-pound title with a 15-9 win over Luis Velazco of Pasco.

Also advancing to state for Chiawana are Josh Miranda (fourth, 120), Nathan Bengen (third, 126), Cory Johnson (fourth, 160), Kameron Silvers (second, 195) and Alex Campos (fourth, 285).

Victor Ramirez of Pasco won the 113-pound title, beating Elias Romero of Sunnyside 8-7 in overtime.

“I was really happy for Victor,” Pasco coach Jay Covington said. “We have a short week to get ready for the Tacoma Dome and bring home more hardware.”

Jake Covington, who was second at 138 pounds, rounds out the Bulldogs’ state contingent.

The Richland Bombers crowned a champion in Nic Workman, who beat Noah Buckley of Lewis & Clark, 2-1.

In addition to Workman, Richland will send Noah Reyes (fourth, 132) and Isaac Lovato (fourth, 182) to state.

Sunnyside’s Jose Campos won the 106-pound title with a 7-3 decision over Moses Lake’s Jesus Cornejo. Joining Campos at state will be Romero, Jacob Mendoza (second, 120), Silas Jasso (third, 120), Josiah Rodriguez (second, 126), Diego Castaneda (second, 145) and JJ Rodriguez (fourth, 152).

2A REGION 4 TOURNAMENT

Alejandro Cardenas won the 126-pound title and leads an Othello contingent of nine who will compete at Mat Classic next week at the Tacoma Dome.

The Huskies finished second in the team standings with 160 points, far behind Toppenish, which piled up 229 points.

Cardenas, ranked No. 1 in the state, beat Randy McDonald of East Valley-Spokane 5-4 to earn his first trip to state.

Also headed to state for Othello are Chris Melo (fourth, 106), Jeremy Mendez (third, 113), Collin Freeman (second, 152), Reese Jones (second, 160), Abel Gomez (third, 170), Anthony Ruiz (third, 195), Chemi Cantu (fourth, 285) and Ben Garza (fourth, 113).

Adrian Benitez, who finished third at 106, is Grandview’s lone state qualifier.

GIRLS REGION 4 TOURNAMENT

Sunnyside will send eight to state next weekend at the Tacoma Dome after rolling to the team title with 176 points at Othello High School.

The Grizzlies did not have any champions, but they got second-place finishes from Margarita Torres (235 pounds), Cassidy Ochoa (190) and Daisy Chavez (125).

Defending state champion Grandview was third in the team standings, backed by three champions — Esmeralda Roman (100), Viannei Perez (105) and Desiree Zavala (145).

Pasco, fifth in the team standings, will send Hailey Hall (first, 140), Danielle Gibson (second, 135), Natalie Hall (second, 145) and Jesse Lobos (fourth, 155) to state.
