The Kamiakin Braves wrapped up their Mid-Columbia Conference season with a 50-12 home victory Thursday over the Southridge Suns and a perfect 7-0 record.

“We had a goal of winning the league title and we wanted to win it undefeated, and we did,” Kamiakin coach Jordan Anderson said. “This is an amazing group of kids.”

The Braves also took the bone from the Suns, who have had it for more than five years. The bone is awarded each year to the Kennewick, Southridge or Kamiakin wrestling program that has the best record over its in-town rivals.

But Anderson must wait to get his hands on the prize.

“(Southridge coach John Hogg) said he forgot it,” Anderson said.

In key matches, Kamiakin freshman Austin Almaguer bumped up to 120 pounds, where he decisioned Xavier Velasco 3-2. Jesus Ramos moved from 126 to 132, where he beat Southridge’s Cesar Flores 4-2.

Suns junior Zayid Al-Ghani dropped down to 160, where he rallied for a 9-6 win over Jacob Lawson.

“That was a battle between two top-five ranked kids in the state,” Anderson said. “It was a fun match to watch. Jacob had the lead going into the third round, and Zayid was able to put him on his back.”

Kamiakin will host the district tournament Feb. 6.

“It would be nice to win the district title at home,” Anderson said.
