Pasco, Kamiakin grapplers make strong showings

Victor Ramirez of Pasco went 4-0, including an 8-5 win over Chrys Cenkush of Orting in the 113-pound championship match Saturday at the Matman Classic wrestling tournament in Silverdale. The Bulldogs finished fourth as a team thanks to strong finishes from Patrick Torrez (3-1 at 126), Jake Covington (3-1 at 145), Luis Velazco (3-1 at 152) and Misael Estrada (3-1 at 195).

Moses Lake won the team championship with 176 points, followed by Orting (163.5), Mt. Spokane (137.5) and Pasco (122.5).

“We wanted to get over and see how the kids could do. I was very pleased with their effort today,” Bulldogs coach Jay Covington said. “Victor Ramirez has been coming right along, getting better each week. He started the season at 126, moved down to 120 and is now at 113. He’s found his spot and he’s getting after it.”

RIVER CITY DUALS: Kamiakin finished third at the River City Duals in Post Falls, Idaho, as Austin Almaguer (113 pounds) and Riley Gurr (120) each went 5-0 with three pins in their weight classes.

Nick Little also went 4-1 at 285 pounds, recording four pins.

The Braves went 2-0 in their pod, recording dual-meet wins over Bonners Ferry and Post Falls ‘B’, before going 2-1 in the Gold bracket, where only a close 42-36 loss to Columbia kept Kamiakin out of the championship.

RAY WESTBURG WRESTLING INVITATIONAL: Sunnyside crowned three champions in running away with the team title in Ellensburg.

The Grizzlies got wins from Elias Romero (120 pounds), Jacob Mendoza (126) and Josiah Rodriguez (132) in piling up 232 points to easily beat second-place Othello (168).

Mendoza was named the outstanding wrestler in the lower weights, while Michael Ferguson of Cheney (220-pound champion) earned the honor in the upper weights.

Othello got titles from TJ Martinez at 182 and Anthony Ruiz at 195, and also had two second-place finishers.

OREGON CLASSIC: Hermiston destroyed all comers at the Oregon Classic in Redmond, going 4-0 in dual meets against Mountain View, St. Helens, Central and Crater. Sam Colbray (195 pounds), C.J. Hendon (138) and Joey Gutierrez (160) each recorded four pins on the day, while Andy Wagner (126) and Bob Coleman (182) also went undefeated for the Bulldogs.
