Prep wrestling: Kamiakin places 3rd at Best of West
Kamiakin, on the strength of titles by Riley Gurr at 120 pounds and Jacob Lawson at 160, finished third in the team scoring on the final day of the Best of the West wrestling tournament at Pasco High School.
Newburg, Ore., which won the dual portion of the tournament on Friday, won the team title on Saturday.
Kamiakin’s Gurr beat Newburg’s Aerie Baxter 11-0 in his title match, while Lawson won at 160 when he pinned Raul Martinez of Warden in the title match.
Two other Tri-Citians took individual crowns.
Pasco’s Luis Velazco pinned Kamiakin’s Sione Halo in 1:33 to take the 152-pound crown.
Southridge’s Zayid Al-Ghani defeated Connell’s Brandon Chavez 7-5 to take the title at 170 pounds.

Girls wrestling
GRANDVIEW WINS 2 DUALS: The Greyhounds beat Quincy 20-0 and topped Prosser 18-3 on Friday. Maria Reyes (105 pounds) and Vicky Mendoza (155) each recorded pins in under a minute against the Mustangs. Daisy DeLeon chalked up Prosser’s only win, a 4-2 decision over Jasel Perez at 125.
