Othello tops Prosser in district volleyball matchup
The Othello Huskies found a way to beat Prosser’s big blocking duo of Courtney Scott and Leah Blakney, beating the Mustangs 25-16, 26-28, 25-17, 25-22 in a Class 2A District 5 volleyball match Wednesday in Othello.
The Huskies earned another home game — they will face Clarkston, the Great Northern League’s No. 2 seed — at 1 p.m. Saturday to decide the No. 4 seed to state, while Prosser will visit Pullman, the GNL No. 1 seed, at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Othello’s Cayleen Garza led all hitters with 13 kills, while Becky Boersma chipped in eight kills.
Scott and Blakney combined for 15 blocks, while Shay Hicks and Hannah Lind teamed up for 15 kills and 31 digs to lead the Mustangs, who tied things up in the second set after a decisive first-set loss.
After a loss in the third set, Prosser also threatened to tie things up again, taking an 18-11 in the fourth set before Othello came back to close out the match.
“They tied it up at 18, then we led again 20-18. Then we forgot to take care of the ball,” Mustangs coach Wendy Meindorf said. “We were both tired. We both played two matches (Tuesday) night. They were just aggressive and played smart.”
