The Richland Bombers volleyball team must be hitting its stride.
After being taken to five sets against a gritty Chiawana squad just last week, the Bombers swept the Riverhawks 25-19, 26-24, 25-19 to win the Class 4A District 5 championship Saturday at Art Dawald Gymnasium. Lexi Lacey chalked up 10 kills and 15 digs, and Kamry Breard had a balanced stat line of eight kills, three aces, 11 assists and seven digs to pave the way for Richland’s No. 1 seeding to the District 5/8 regional tournament beginning Tuesday.
The Bombers, however, won’t play until Saturday in Spokane, where they will meet Central Valley.
“I’m thinking we were fired up. We had a tough match over there (at Chiawana), but I think we were confident pretty much the whole time,” Richland coach Bob Raidl said. “We got down pretty far (9-2) in the second set, but the girls chipped away and managed to win points when it counted.”

McKaidan Moore led Chiawana with nine kills and 13 digs, while Bethanie Nelson had seven kills.
“They won the serve receive battle, that’s what it came down to,” Chiawana coach Jim Steach said. “We had too many unforced errors. We started out missing serves in that first set and it was an uphill battle the whole way. We had nine hitting errors in second set. That was key in a 26-24 loss.”

“She did a good job,” Southridge coach John Lengphounpraseut said of the 6-foot-2 Stapleton. “She got a big chuck of her team’s hitting. She had a good day.”
Kamiakin will host the District 5 regional tournament Saturday.

“I feel pretty good going in,” said Lengphounpraseut, whose team is looking for its fourth consecutive trip to state. “We just need to go in with the same mindset as last year and try to fight for that second spot. It’s within our reach. I think we can do it.”
