PREP VOLLEYBALL: Kamiakin sweeps Hanford to move to 3-0
The Kamiakin volleyball team got a quick reminder about how competitive the Mid-Columbia Conference can be, ekeing out a 26-24 Game 1 win Tuesday in Kennewick.
But the Braves made life a little easier on themselves in Games 2 and 3, winning 25-13, 25-19 to complete the MCC sweep of Hanford.
“I’m pleased with the way we played,” Kamiakin coach Mary Opitz said. “We have some things we need to work on. We’re always trying to get better each time we step on the floor.”
Reilee Williams and Mikael Sanchez led Hanford with four kills apiece.
“We played well, but we have to come out more competitive on Thursday (against Pasco),” Falcons coach Kate Mitchell said. “(Kamiakin was) a good team. They played really good defense, and we seemed to struggle on defense.”

Southridge 3, Kennewick 0: The Suns continute their dominant play in the Mid-COlumbia Conference, sweeping the Lions to improve to 3-0.
“We served really strong tonight” said Southridge coach John Lengphounpraseut. “We had 16 serve aces as a team. We can locate the ball pretty good.”
Outside hitters Jordan Mix and Alyssas Palmer again led the way with 18 and 11 kills, while Maddisen McNeill added seven blocks and four kills.
“Those two are our 1-2 punch outside,” Lengphounpraseut said. “We need to get our middle hitting going better.”

Walla Walla 3, Chiawana 1: The Riverhawks had plenty of chances to pull ahead, but team errors led to their downfall in a four-set MCC home loss to the Blue Devils.
“Walla Walla did some good things. We just couldn’t get out of our own way,” Chiawana coach Jim Steach said after his team committed 27 hitting errors and 15 service errors. “Whenever we were in position to win, we didn’t make a play that was there.

Richland 3, Pasco 0: The Bombers took advantage of a reeling Bulldogs team missing a key player to record an MCC sweep in Pasco.
Kamry Beard led Richland with eight kills, while Sarah McCormick chipped in 24 digs. Taylor Moody had 11 assists and 10 digs.
But Bulldogs coach Jackie Fluaitt didn’t use injuries as an excuse.
“Richland is always a tough team. They always bring kids that play really scrappy ball,” Fluaitt said. “They’re relentless in their pursuit of every ball.”
Ashlin Orozco led Pasco with 13 kills.

Grandview 3, Wapato 0: Samantha Grove had 10 kills, and Hannah Pond finished with 11 digs as the host Greyhounds swept in a nonleague match against the Wolves.

ELLENSBURG 3, PROSSER 0: Alli LaMotte had seven kills, three aces and 14 digs, but it wasn’t enough as visiting Prosser lost a 2A CWAC match against Ellensburg.

Connell 3, River View 0: The host Eagles opened SCAC East play with a sweep of the Panthers. Savannah Egbert had 11 kills, and Jessica Hawkins and Dakota Olberding each finished with 10 for Connell, which won the Kiona-Benton jamboree and a nonleague contest against Othello.

Kiona-Benton 3, Royal 1: Momo Calzadillas recorded a career-high 42 digs and added five service aces to lead the Bears to a four-set win at Royal City.
Kyrsten Whitmore led both sides with 14 kills, and Tegan Carlson chipped in 16 assists and four aces for Ki-Be.
