Pasco volleyball tops Walla Walla in district opener

Carina Sullivan had 33 assists and four aces to lead the Pasco Bulldogs to a 25-23, 25-27, 25-23, 25-23 victory Tuesday over visiting Walla Walla in the Mid-Columbia Conference 4A district tournament.

Catelyn Linke added 13 kills and three blocks for Pasco, which travels to Richland at 7 p.m. Thursday in a loser-out district contest.

Southridge 3, Kennewick 0: The Suns scraped out a 27-25 Game 1 win before securing an MCC road sweep of the Lions.

Southridge also put the finishing touches on an undefeated league season for the first time ever. The Suns (23-1, 14-0) earned the No. 1 seed out of the MCC and home court advantage until the state tournament and will open their playoff run against visiting Rogers at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Despite the loss, Kennewick (8-19) locked up the No. 3 seed into the District 5/8 playoffs, earning a trip to Rogers High School in Spokane to play Shadle Park at 2 p.m. Saturday.

“I’m very proud of these girls and how they fought this year,” Suns coach John Lengphounpraseut said. “We still have a couple of big trophies we hope to play for.”

Kamiakin 3, Hanford 1: Amanda Miller and Nicole Lee combined for 31 kills, and Rachel Leshikar collected 24 digs as the Braves rebounded from a Game 2 loss for an MCC road win at Hanford.

“We had a hard time getting into sync to start with. To Hanford’s credit, they took advantage and put us back on our heels,” Kamiakin coach Mary Opitz said.

The Braves (21-6) will open the Class 3A District 5/8 playoffs at home against Rogers at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Liberty 3, Hermiston 0: Brea Kestler recorded 25 assists and 12 digs to lead the Bulldogs, who were swept by Liberty in the play-in round of the Class 5A OSAA state playoffs.

East Valley 3, Prosser 0: Rachel Harle recorded 21 digs and Hayley Pederson had six kills to lead the Mustangs in a CWAC road loss.

Grandview 3, Ephrata 1: Evann Swearingen was 23-of-23 serving as the Greyhounds locked up a playoff spot with a CWAC home win.
