Volleyball: Kamiakin notches sweep of Richland

Two days after getting the broom, the Kamiakin volleyball team was happy to give it.

Jessica Edminster’s three quick aces were part of an 8-1 start for the Braves, who went on to hand Richland a three-set setback, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 on Thursday night at Kamiakin.

“I don’t know, we just kind of clicked a little bit tonight,” Braves coach Mary Opitz said. “Both teams -- they were very scrappy, going after everything. It was very exciting to watch.”

Edminster finished 18-for-20 serving with five aces, 20 assists and nine digs. Amanda Miller and Taylor Janicek each had strong all-around nights with a combined 22-for-23 serving, 24 kills and 36 digs.

Alisha Bettinson led Richland with 14 kills and 21 digs, and Dez Estavillo was busy with 23 digs.

Southridge 3, Hanford 1: The Suns won a tough match against the visiting Falcons in Mid-Col play.Kylie Fraga had 56 assists, six blocks and five kills, while sophomore Alyssa Palmer broke through with 22 kills and 14 digs for Southridge.

Hanford had a new setter in Bailee Drussel, who was pulled up from JV this week. She recorded 34 assists, while Kelly Wahl added seven kills and six blocks.

Chiawana 3, Kennewick 1: Lexie Reid went on a seven-point service run in the fourth set to help the Riverhawks seal their Mid-Columbia Conference victory over the Lions.

Shantelle Hill had 16 kills and 12 digs for Chiawana, while Kennewick got 22 assists and eight digs from Maddie Zinsli.

Grandview 3, Toppenish 0: The Greyhounds won a nonleague road match behind the strong play of Taylor Hall, who had 12 kills, 13 digs and three blocks.

Connell 3, Columbia (Burbank) 1: It took the Eagles awhile to get going, but once they did they cruised to an SCAC East home victory.

Wahluke 3, Royal 2: The Warriors won their first match in three years, rallying past the Knights in the SCAC East opener for both teams.

Cassandra Villalobos had six aces and 15 digs, while Rebecca Ramirez was 20-of-21 serving with four aces.

“It was a great win,” Wahluke coach Rudi Christian said. “The girls really pushed hard at the end.”

This is Christian’s third season as the head coach at the Mattawa school, and it was her first taste of victory.
