Kennewick knocks off Kamiakin in MCC volleyball

It was just a matter of time before coach Brandy Sonderland had the Kennewick volleyball program up and running.

Tuesday, the Lions knocked off perennial powerhouse Kamiakin (2-1) on the road in five sets for their first Mid-Columbia Conference win in more than a year.

“It’s rewarding to get a win like this and see their efforts pay off,” Sonderland said. “To do it in their gym — they have some rowdy fans — I am unbelievably proud.”

Brianna Shaffer led the Lions (1-2) with 25 kills, while Monica Kaylor had 11 kills, six blocks and 14 digs, and Madeline Gebers 40 assists.

“We have been competing and we were finally able to finish it,” Sonderland said. “It was the most consistent match we have played. They are a focused group and ready to take care of business.”
