Richland opens defense of MCC volleyball title with win over Kennewick

Defending Mid-Columbia Conference champion Richland opened the season Tuesday with a sweep of visiting Kennewick.

“We had a balanced attack tonight,” Bombers coach Bob Raidl said. “Kennewick is an improved program with Brandy Sonderland in charge. They are a good team and will beat some people this year.”

Abby Sorensen led the way with seven kills and 16 assists for the Bombers, who will play at Chiawana on Thursday. Jordanne Bauder added five kills, 11 assists and seven digs.

“We have to get our selves focused for Chiawana at their place,” Raidl said. “It’s a tough place to play.”

HANFORD 3, WALLA WALLA 1: Caylee Shelton and Macy Jensen each had 19 kills in the Falcons’ MCC road victory over the Blue Devils.

Kaitlyn Thompson handed out 42 assists for Hanford, which will host Kamiakin on Thursday.

KAMIAKIN 3, PASCO 0: Kourtney Collins had seven kills, and Janessa Pearson added six as the Braves made quick work of the visiting Bulldogs.

Angelica Guzman led Pasco with 13 digs, while Annaleece Scott had three kills and three aces.

Pasco will play at Southridge on Thursday.

CHIAWANA 3, SOUTHRIDGE 1: Mareesa Hill pounded down 16 kills, and McKenna Kaelber handed out 27 assists the Riverhawks opened their season with a home victory over Southridge.

Sophia Sumner led the Suns with 15 kills and 15 digs, while Kennedy Conrad had 32 assists.

PROSSER 3, SUNNYSIDE 0: Kayla Lind played a solid all-around match with 15 digs, 23 assists and four ace serves to lead the Mustangs to a nonleague road win over the Grizzlies.

Leah Blakney added nine kills and five blocks for Prosser, which will host Granger on Thursday.

KIONA-BENTON AT GRANGER JAMBOREE: The Bears split sets with Zillah and Goldendale, and were swept by the host Spartans.

On the night, Mihaela Edwards had 26 kills, 10 blocks, 27 digs and was 19-for-20 serving for Ki-Be. Gabby Edwards added 12 kills and 33 digs, while Maloree Calzadillas had 15 kills and 31 assists.

The Bears open SCAC play Thursday at Connell.

Set scores: Granger d. Kiona-Benton 25-13, 25-17; Kiona-Benton splits with Zillah 28-26, 20-25; Kiona-Benton splits with Goldendale 19-25, 25-20.
