Soccer roundup for Saturday, Sept. 12: Chiawana beats Kamiakin in shootout

The Chiawana High School girls soccer team had a response for Kamiakin every time the Braves scored Saturday at Lampson Stadium.

Chiawana extended the match beyond regulation, thanks to JuliAnna Ventura’s goal in the 72nd minute. After two scoreless overtime periods, the Riverhawks prevailed 4-3 with a 4-2 shootout victory.

“We’re really happy,” Chiawana coach Rich Zoller said. “Especially coming back from behind three different times just shows that our team has a lot of heart.”

The Riverhawks improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-Columbia Conference ahead of Tuesday’s home contest against Southridge. Kamiakin fell to 2-1, 1-1.

Kamiakin’s Rilee Castilla scored in the 31st minute to make it 1-0, but Macey Morales tied it in the 49th. Six minutes later, Castilla scored again on a penalty kick.

Summer Yates pulled Chiawana even once more with a penalty kick in the 63rd.

In the 68th, Izzy Conover’s goal gave Kamiakin a 3-2 lead, but soon after, Ventura connected on an assist from Justice Aragon to knot the score for a third time.

Aragon, Yates, Braydey Hodgins and Amber Gama led the way for Chiawana in the shootout, while Conover and Kaeri Ward scored for Kamiakin.

RICHLAND 3, PASCO 0: Karsyn Suhadolnik notched a hat trick in the first 21 minutes, including a goal in the opening minute, to lead the Bombers to an MCC home victory.

Taylor Matheny added a goal and an assist for the Falcons, who had 39 shots in the match.
