Girls soccer roundup: Kamiakin routs Chiawana 5-0
A half-hour went by before the Kamiakin High School girls soccer team broke a scoreless tie in Saturday’s Mid-Columbia Conference match at Chiawana.
After that, the rout was on.
Lexi McQueary scored with 31 minutes gone in the first half, and the Braves went on to beat Chiawana 5-0.
Rilee Castilla had two goals and an assist for the Braves, who are 2-0 in MCC play. The Riverhawks fell to 1-1.
Kamiakin coach Chris Erikson credited the Chiawana trio of Alexis Stephenson, Braydey Hodgins and freshman Summer Yates for making things hard on the Braves early.
“They were very strong, and we had to defend hard in the first half,” Erikson said. “They were a big part of it. That Summer Yates is tough. You can’t get the ball away from her, but Alexis Stephenson flies down the field.”
Erikson said the Braves were able to capitalize on some Chiawana mistakes as the match wore on.
“They’re a more formidable team than the score reflects,” Erikson said.
Kamiakin’s Kelci Young stopped all six shots she faced.
“Our keeper did an excellent job,” Erikson said. “She was brilliant. She made a lot of solid choices. Very smart, makes good decisions. That helped turn the tide.”
