Soccer roundup: Southridge loses 1-0 to defending 4A state champ
A 1-0 loss in the season opener usually isn’t something to celebrate, especially for an established program such as the Southridge girls soccer team.
But coming against defending Class 4A state champion Central Valley — and in overtime no less — certainly puts a positive spin on the start of the season.
“I think when you play a team of their caliber, it’s a good first game to see where we’re at, see what we need to work on,” Suns coach Greg Sambrano said after Saturday’s loss at home.
CV’s Kelsey Turnbow finally cracked the scoreless game in the final minute of overtime after the two teams played nearly even for 84 minutes.
“Central Valley had better chances,” Sambrano said, “and Tiara Valadez played really, really well in goal. She had some good saves for us. But both teams hit some posts, both teams had some chances.”

Shadle Park 1, Pasco 0: The Bulldogs allowed a goal in the 65th minute to Shadle Park’s Keilah Shaw and couldn’t come back in Spokane.
The Bulldogs stayed the night in Spokane after opening the season Friday with a 1-0 loss to University.
“We played outstanding defense, just not enough offense,” Pasco coach Justin Carey said.
Pasco’s Carrie Nolan was in net for 65 minutes before giving way to Daisy Torres for the rest of the match.

Lewis & Clark 2, Chiawana 0: Jessica Ellingsen scored a pair of goals on assists from Olivia Harris 20 minutes apart in the second half to lead the Spokane team to a nonleague win at home.
Chiawana goalie Cydni Cottrell made 11 saves as the Riverhawks were outshot 14-7.
