Soccer: Sunnyside falls in 3A semis

Mercer Island 2, Sunnyside 0: Ryan Hill scored two goals for the Islanders to dash the Grizzlies hopes of their first state championship.

The teams battled through 58 scoreless minutes before Hill scored off a long throw in in the 59th minute. When Sunnyside pushed numbers up on the attack late in the game, Hill scored off a counter-attack with five minutes left in the match.

“We had many chances. It wasn’t a total domination,” Grizzlies co-coach David Guevarra said. “For the most part, the boys played extra tough. They’re a little upset, but I told them, ‘Hey, we still have one more game.’

“We can let it hurt for a little bit, but then let’s put it in our back pocket.”

Tate Crenshaw made three saves for Mercer Island, which will face Lakeside of Seattle at 2 p.m. in the championship game.

Both teams have played for the title — twice for Mercer Island, three times for Lakeside — but neither has come away with a state championship.

Scoring—1, MI, Ryan Hill, 59:00; 2, MI, Hill, 75:00. Shots—MI 8, S 5. Saves—MI, Tate Crenshaw 3. S, Jorge Villegas 4.
