The Chiawana High School girls soccer team’s defense held strong nearly the whole way, but Wenatchee’s Jaden Griggs found an opening in the 76th minute to lift the host Panthers to a 1-0 victory in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs Tuesday at the Apple Bowl.

Wenatchee (15-2) will play Kennedy Catholic — beat Lake Stevens 1-0 — in the quarterfinals.

After winning three loser-out games in a row in the District 8 tournament to reach state for the third straight year, Chiawana finishes its season with a 14-6 record, and goes to 0-4 all-time in the state playoffs.

Senior Summer Yates led the MCC with 24 goals this year despite missing four games while touring China with the U.S. U-19 Women’s National Team. She earned her first league Player of the Year nod and was named to the All-MCC first team for a fourth time.
