MCC/GSL subregional: Chiawana, Richland girls will face off for state berth

To get to the Class 4A girls basketball state regionals, the Chiawana Riverhawks must get past a familiar foe.

Chiawana’s path to the next round grew more complicated with an 84-72 home loss to Lewis & Clark in the 4A District 5/8 subregional tournament Friday night.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, the Riverhawks (20-3) will host Mid-Columbia Conference rival Richland (18-6). The winner will go to state regionals as the No. 3 seed, while the loser goes home.

Chiawana’s Braydey Hodgins turned in a 38-point performance against Lewis & Clark, but her future Boise State teammate Riley Lupfer had a spectacular game of her own for the Tigers (18-5).

Lupfer finished with 32 points and five steals for Lewis & Clark, which will play at Greater Spokane League powerhouse Central Valley (23-0) on Saturday night for 1-2 seeding to next week’s state regionals.

Lewis & Clark also got 27 points and eight rebounds from Taylor Cunningham.

The Tigers outscored the Riverhawks 51-32 over the second and third quarters, and held Chiawana to six assists.

Hodgins did most of her damage from the free-throw line, making 21 of her 23 attempts.

CENTRAL VALLEY 74, RICHLAND 34: Kamri von Oelhoffen and Emily Garza each scored eight points to lead a Richland squad battling illness almost as much as they were their formidable foe.

The Bombers shot just 22 percent (10-for-45) from the field. Lexi Hull had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Bears.

KAMIAKIN 62, MT. SPOKANE 54: Getting 18 points from Oumou Toure and 15 from Alexa Hazel, the Braves claimed the No. 1 seed to next week’s 3A state regionals with a home win over the Wildcats.

Kiley Larsen had 14 points for Kamiakin, which outscored Mt. Spokane 19-8 in the third quarter and went on to claim the subregional title.

Mt. Spokane (12-10) will host Southridge at 5 p.m. Saturday to decide the No. 2 seed to state regionals.

SOUTHRIDGE 66, NORTH CENTRAL 46: The Suns lived to play at least another day in this postseason.

Trailing by two at halftime against North Central, host Southridge vowed to pick up the tempo in the third quarter. The Suns opened on a 13-0 run and outscored the Indians 23-6 in the period, going on to eliminate NC from the 3A District 5/8 subregional.

Shyler Sullivan had 22 points, and Ellie Smith finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks for Southridge (12-11).

“There was a great focus in practice this week,” Suns coach Mike Conner said. “The kids came ready to play.”

North Central, which got 15 points from Quincy McDeid, finished its season with a 9-14 record.

CENTRAL VALLEY 82, RICHLAND 75 (OT): The No. 1 seeds in the 4A District 5/8 subregionals will be playing for the No. 3 seed to state regionals.

MCC No. 1 Richland (18-4) fell at home against Central Valley, setting up Saturday’s 5 p.m. loser-out game at GSL No. 1 Gonzaga Prep (21-2). The Bullpups also went to overtime Friday night, suffering a 75-73 home loss to Lewis & Clark (19-5).

Steven Beo scored 48 points for the Bombers, shooting 14-for-32 from the field and 13-for-16 from the free-throw line, but the senior guard’s monster game wasn’t enough against the Bears (18-5).

Ryan Rehkow had 20 points to lead five Central Valley players in double figures.

KAMIAKIN 71, ROGERS 44: Hayden Nelson had 22 points and eight rebounds to help the Braves advance in the 3A bracket.

Kamiakin will play at Kennewick at 7 p.m. Saturday in a loser-out game. The Braves are 2-1 against the Lions this season. The winner will join Shadle Park in the state regionals.

The Braves (16-6) got off to a quick start and never slowed down.

“It’s always nice to get off to a hot start an get a little momentum rolling,” Kamiakin coach Brian Meneely said. “The kids did a nice job. We had a lot of kid contribute. We did a nice job on the glass, we outrebounded them 44-21.

Isaiah Brimmer added 11 points and nine rebounds.

SHADLE PARK 66, KENNEWICK 65: Dillon Plew scored 18 points, Nico Benavidez added 17 and Kafaya Bugal chipped in 15, but the Lions (13-11) came up short and will face a familiar foe in a must-win game for state.

After falling behind by 10 at the half, Kennewick chipped away in the second half, eventually getting a shot to win in the closing seconds that didn’t fall.

“In that second quarter (25-11 for Shadle), they got going, hit some big shots, and we were’t as efficient on offenes,” Kennewick coach Bradyn Leyde said. “Then we made up the deficit.”
