District basketball for Feb. 13: Connell boys lose in SCAC semifinals

LA SALLE 54, CONNELL 37: Gabe Tolrud scored 12 points, and Brenden Turner had 11, but the Eagles lost to the Lightning in the SCAC district semifinals in Wapato.

Connell, the SCAC East No. 1 seed, fell behind 20-11 in the first quarter and trailed 28-17 at halftime.

The Eagles (17-5) will play Kiona-Benton in a loser-out game Thursday in Toppenish or Sunnyside.

La Salle, the SCAC West’s No. 2 seed, will face Zillah on Feb. 20 in Sunnyside for the district title and 1-2 seeding to state regionals.

Chayce Sorbel led the Coyotes (7-15) with 11 points.

ROYAL 57, GRANGER 51: The Knights won in Toppenish to eliminate the Spartans from the SCAC district tournament.

Royal (8-14) will face Naches Valley in a loser-out game Thursday in Toppenish or Sunnyside.

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN 55, COLTON 38: Cameron Godwin had 21 points, and Chris Kelly had 16 points and 18 rebounds to lead the host Patriots past the Wildcats in 1B District 9 tournament action.

Liberty Christian (14-7) will play the Pomeroy/Garfield-Palouse winner at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Walla Walla Community College for the district championship and the No. 1 seed to state regionals.

The DeSales boys, who lost to Asotin in Friday’s District 9 championship game, will face District 7 No. 1 seed Northwest Christian at 1:30 p.m. at Dayton.

Walla Walla Valley Academy, the District 9 No. 3 seed, will play Davenport at 1:30 p.m. in a loser-out game at Waitsburg.

On the girls side, District 9 No. 2 seed DeSales will face Colfax at noon at Dayton. District 9 No. 1 seed Dayton will host St. George’s at 3:30 p.m.

WWVA, the District 9 No. 3 seed, will face Davenport at noon in an elimination game at Waitsburg.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

CONNELL 61, RIVER VIEW 46: Behind big games from Kendra Wallin (21 points) and Heather Hawkins (10 points, 10 rebounds, six steals), the Eagles ousted the Panthers from the SCAC district tournament in Wapato.

Both teams had a hefty fourth quarter, when Connell outscored River View 25-22.

Connell (13-9) will play Columbia-Burbank on Thursday night in an elimination game in Toppenish or Sunnyside. The Coyotes (17-5) lost to Granger 48-44 in a late Saturday semifinal in Toppenish.

Morgan Munson finished with 16 points for the Panthers (7-16).
