Winning the district title has it’s perks.

In the Mid-Columbia Conference’s Class 3A division, you win district, you only have to win one game to get a trip to the state regionals. Lose, and you have to win twice.

That’s what’s in store for the Kamiakin, Southridge and Kennewick girls this weekend.

Kennewick (7-13) plays at Southridge (10-9) at 5:45 p.m. Friday for a trip to the district title game Saturday at Kamiakin (10-10).

Once the district seeds have been decided, the MCC No. 1 and the Greater Spokane League No. 1 face each other in the sub-regional at the site of the MCC top seed. The No. 2 seeds play each other, also at the MCC school, in a loser-out game. Both games are Feb. 19.

The winner of the No. 1 seeds gets a state regional berth, while the loser plays the winner of the No. 2 matchup for the second berth to state.

In the GSL, North Central (9-12) is at Mt. Spokane (11-9) on Friday in the district title game. Both advance to sub-regionals.

Class 4A

The 4A division is a little more confusing. Basically, you want to be the district champion. That way, if you should lose your first game in the sub-regionals, you get one more shot for the third seed to state.

The Richland Bombers (16-4) host Walla Walla (11-9) at 5 p.m. Friday in a loser-out game, with the winner playing at Chiawana (19-2) on Saturday for the district title.

The MCC No. 2 hosts the GSL No. 3 on Tuesday in a loser-out game. That winner joins the MCC No. 1 and the GSL Nos. 1 and 2 teams in a four-team playoff Feb. 19.

With top-ranked Central Valley likely the GSL No. 1, avoiding the Bears is highly advised.

“With Central Valley being so dominant, it’s really important to win the district title,” Richland coach Cindy McCoy said.

The winner of Tuesday’s loser-out game plays at the GSL No. 1, while the MCC No. 1 hosts the GSL No. 2. The winners play for the sub-regional title and 1-2 seeding into state regionals, while the two losers battle it out for the No. 3 seed to state.

In the GSL on Thursday, University (12-9) is at Central Valley (20-0) and Mead (12-8) is at Lewis & Clark (16-4).

The winners advance to the district title game, and both advance to the regional tournament, while the two losers will play for the third and final berth to regionals.

The District 5 tournament gets under way Thursday with Kiona-Benton (13-7) at Granger (17-3), Naches Valley (8-12) at Columbia Burbank (16-4), Zillah (17-4) at Connell (12-8) and River View (7-14) at LaSalle (19-1). All games are at 7 p.m.

The winners advance to Saturday’s winners bracket, while the losers have a long trip through the consolation bracket to try and pick up the third seed to state.

Saturday’s games will be played at Wapato and Toppenish, but the schedule and times won’t be known until after Thursday’s games. The tournament runs through Feb. 20.

2B District

There are three seeds up for grabs for next week’s District 7-9 tournament.

Asotin and Walla Walla Valley Academy will play a loser-out game at 2 p.m. Friday at DeSales High School for the third seed, while host DeSales (15-6) will take on Dayton for 1-2 seeding at 5 p.m.

1B District

The Touchet girls are looking for their first trip to state since 2008 (third place). The Indians have only made two trips to state, with the other being 1974.

Touchet will host St. John-Endicott at 6 p.m. Friday, while seven-time defending state champion Colton will host Oakesdale/Pomeroy at 6 p.m. Friday.
